The Story of Calm Armour Yoga
I first discovered yoga when I was working 9-5 in a corporate career in my early 40's. I had joined a local gym and thought - why not try it? I found it difficult at first to follow the instructions and get my arms and legs in the right place, before we all moved on to the next pose - but was I delighted when we all lay down at the end of the class and listened to some wonderful music. As I rolled up my mat, I realised I felt profoundly different in a very good way - and carried on going to classes.
There are a lot of myths about yoga. I've tried to bust a few of these in my FAQ section. Yoga is much more mainstream now, but I still hear people say things like "you have to be thin to do yoga" or "you have to be vegan to be a yogi" or "yoga is only for naturally flexible people". In fact, I am none of those things, yet I've been teaching yoga successfully since 2020 because I want to share my passion for it with others. I want people to know that yoga is for everyone.
I trained in Hatha yoga - known by some as "Western Yoga". It is a slower, more meditative practice where poses are held for longer (but not too long!) The great thing is, the pace is perfect for beginners and those who want to really enjoy the poses. It differs from Vinyasa Yoga, which is done at a faster pace, and combines breath with movement. Of course, within a yoga class there is plenty of room for creativity and I take inspiration from other forms of yoga - for example Kundalini yoga. What I'm always looking for though, is an enjoyable combination of breathwork, movement, stretch, balance and finally some form of gentle mediation at the end. I like to add in little surprises - a short yoga nidra, some facial yoga perhaps - maybe even some poetry. At the end of my classes you will have built strength into your bones and muscles, given your internal organs a gentle massage and soothed your spirit. The most lovely thing about Yoga, for me, is that it builds resilience - both in body and mind - which is why I called it Calm Armour Yoga.
