Frequently Asked Questions

In this section, I've tried to answer the questions that most commonly come up.  But if you want to ask me more about yoga or about my classes please contact me or fill out my enquiry form - I'll come back to you as soon as I can.

Question

I'd like to try yoga but I've heard it is only for flexible people.  I don't think I'm very flexible and I can't touch my toes!

Answer

The funny thing is, yoga is likely to increase your flexibility.  People who do not do yoga - even if they are very fit - may have problems with stiffness as they age.  This is normal.  The good thing is that yoga can be great for those with arthritis, hip replacements or for those who feel that they may be overweight.  Luckily, there are now lots of images in the media of people of all ages and sizes doing the most challenging of yoga poses.

Question

Are all yoga teachers vegan?

Answer

Certainly not!  Yoga teachers come from all sorts of backgrounds and beliefs and being vegan is not necessary.  Some yoga teachers choose to align with the principle of "Ahimsa" (non-violence) which means a plant-based diet is attractive but studies indicate that only about 30% of yoga teachers are vegan.

Question

Can I do yoga if I am pregnant?

Answer

Certainly!  You will need to let your yoga teacher know if you are pregnant, so that they can offer some adapted poses where necessary.  Some poses are not suitable for pregnant women - depending on the stage of the pregnancy.  While I can offer adaptations, I am not a specialist in pregnancy yoga.  If you prefer, once you become pregnant, you might want to start "Pregnancy Yoga Classes" where the teacher will be a specialist.

How can I ensure that I will be safe doing this yoga class?

Question

I have personally conducted a Health and Safety Risk Assessment as advocated by HSE for the room.  You are welcome to inspect this if you would like.  I am insured to teach yoga to participants over the age of 14.  I do require every participant to complete a PAR-Q before doing any of my classes and you will be sent a copy of my GDPR policy and my Terms and Conditions which I will ask you to accept before attending.  If you wish to see my certificate or proof of insurance I can arrange that for you.

Question

What do I need to bring to yoga?

Answer

I have some yoga mats but these are limited, so you may prefer to buy your own, top quality yoga mat.  I provide blocks and straps but again, you may wish to buy your own.  It is always useful to bring a blanket and don't forget your water bottle.  A buckwheat bolster may be something you want to invest in (I can provide advice on these).

Question

What do I wear to yoga?

Answer

Any stretchy clothes are good for yoga.  Make sure that they are clothes that move with you - try bending over and see if your trousers stay up!  I wear fitness clothes - top and leggings, but you do not need to invest in expensive clothes specifically for yoga.  The most important thing is to practice bare foot - no socks please!  (This is to allow you to balance properly in poses and will prevent you slipping.)
